The project »1m2 Market« explores markets as an urban resource for the district. »1m2 Market« is a low-threshold participation tool that unfolds citizens' right to the markets of Vienna. The 23 Viennese markets are district-level infrastructures where local producers and consumers engage in economic exchange.  On 17 of the markets it is possible to run your own 1 m2 market based on the 3-day exemption rule that allows everyone to sell and exchange goods on markets without a business license. In the walkshop from Meiselmarkt to Schweglermarkt, we look behind the scenes, Daniela Patti gives insights into the social welfare and urban planning policies that shaped the markets of Vienna and Rome into public infrastructures of today and we explore the possibilities and limits of marketplaces together with vendors, visitors, researchers, and artists: Are markets integrative public spaces? Are visitors active participants? How can social exchange, art and culture be integrated into the local value chain as basic needs?
